A Look Back at 2007
2007 saw some nice publicity about NYTE. Our Executive Director, Martin Denton, was interviewed by United Stages, and Time Out-New York noted Plays and Playwrights 2007 in an article about getting published. Martin was interviewed about FringeNYC on WNYC public radio by Sutorios Johnson. Clem Richardson wrote about NYTE in the Daily News in October. And Christina Hamlett did a thorough review of Plays and Playwrights 2007 for the American Chronicle newspaper. Plus an equally nice review of the book in Back Stage and a review of Playing with Canons in the online British Theatre Guide. American Theatre magazine noted our 10th anniversary in its December almanac. The New York Innovative Theatre Awards noted our anniversary as one of their “Top 7 of 2007 -- The biggest stories that affected Off-Off-Broadway of 2007.” Indietheater.org and the indie movement was highlighted in John Istel’s essay about off-off-Broadway in The Best Plays Theater Yearbook 2005-2006.
As part of our outreach to the theatre community, Martin participated in a video about off-off/indie theater for 13th St. Rep which has not yet been released. He conducted talkbacks at T. Schreiber Studio and the Brick Theater; was a guest speaker at an NYU class “Redefining the Classics,” at an NYU cultural journalism class, and at a theatre criticism seminar at CUNY Graduate Center. With Kevin Free, he co-hosted the opening ceremonies for FringeNYC. As the year ended he was asked to be part of the steering committee for the new League of Independent Theatres.

NYTE is funded, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs
